A legacy of research excellence: creating hope and unlocking opportunities.
- $60 million+
- 700+ researchers
- since 1957
The Raine Foundation is dedicated to cultivating the finest researchers and financing projects that yield the most potential in delivering meaningful medical benefits, aimed at improving health outcomes and building a healthier future.
Since it’s inception, in 1957, the Raine Medical Research Foundation has distributed over $60 million to more than 700 medical researchers in Western Australia
This funding has helped drive cutting-edge research which investigates, diagnoses and treats some of the most challenging diseases and complex disorders facing the world today.
By embodying the vision of our inspirational founder, Mary Raine, whose goal was to prevent terrible loss and alleviate suffering associated with health conditions, the Foundation has led the way in devising and implementing funding initiatives which empower researchers to create healthier communities.
Many of our alumni have risen to become world-class research leaders, pioneered new treatments and deepened our understanding of various illnesses that affect individuals from childhood right through to old age.
“An important aspect of how the Raine Foundation worked was an exemplary model of how a foundation should govern itself to support high quality research. They would judge the quality and impact of the research and award funds to the most deserving. Not all philanthropic foundations have such good governance.”
Professor Fiona Stanley, National Living Treasure

A history of supporting research excellence
The remarkable legacy that Mary Raine has left to this state is an instrumental gift that has changed the lives of many and transformed the health and medical research landscape in our region and globally.

The Foundation was established by Mary Raine, a pioneering business tycoon and female entrepreneur beyond her times, who accumulated an extraordinary portfolio of properties and hotels during the 1920’s in Western Australia.
Witnessing her husband’s suffering and the lack of effective treatments, inspired Mary Raine to invest her wealth in advancing medical research, and in 1957 the Raine Medical Research Foundation was created.
At the time of her passing, her portfolio of property and investments was valued at £1 million. Today, it has grown to over $55 million. Each year, the foundation distributes approximately $2.5 to $3 million to medical research, which includes contributions from our partners.
Mary Raine’s enduring legacy, has built a phenomenal knowledge base in Western Australia, that has empowered the next generation of research leaders develop innovative solutions to our most pressing health challenges, offering hope and opportunity to those impacted and living with health conditions.
